VOLUNTEERING

A Force for Progress

Volunteers have always been a driving force for progress at the N.C. Transportation Museum. The museum relies on more than 100 volunteers to give guided tours, greet visitors, restore antique rail equipment, run the on-site train, maintain antique automobiles, help in the Gift Station and work during special events.

The NCTM volunteer program is organized into three divisions--Interpretive, Rail Operations and Automotive. Volunteers are welcome to assist in one, two or all of these areas.

Why Should I Volunteer?

Besides getting to work with a great group of people, learning time-honored skills, and having an integral role in a working museum, you'll also get these benefits:
· Discount in the Gift Station
· Annual volunteer banquet
· Invitations to special events and field trips
· Recognition and rewards
· Unlimited free train rides

Maintenance - Perform needed maintenance and repairs to the diesel and steam locomotives, coaches, and cabooses used in our on-site train ride.

Train crew - Rail Operations volunteers can train and become certified by the Federal Railroad Administration as conductors, brakemen, firemen and engineers for our on-site train ride.

Automotive
Maintenance - Assist with regular care and cleaning of vehicles and driving vehicles that are in operating condition to keep them running smoothly.

Outreach - Drive vehicles for parades and during certain special events to represent the museum.
