"Piedmonster" Arrives At The NCTM
Tues - Aug 08, 2006 3:07 - 21PM

Thanks to a donation from the Piedmont Silver Eagles Charitable Funds, Inc., the N.C. Transportation Museum has received the "Piedmonster" - a GAT 1 (General Aviation Trainer) Simulator from the 1950's. Once restored, the "Piedmonster" will be a working, airplane simulator housed in the Wagons, Wheels and Wings exhibit hall, and is sure to be a unique educational tool for children.

The word "Piedmonster" was a term applied to anyone who worked for or was a part of Piedmont Airlines during its heyday. "Piedmonster is a play on words, since the pilots, flight attendants and passengers of Piedmont Airlines were generally known for exuding personality and character,” says Barbara Jamieson Adams, former Piedmont Airlines employee for 35 years.

The N.C. Transportation Museum's "Piedmonster" GAT 1 simulator is about six feet tall, with a wing span of about 12 feet. The seat is just big enough for a child to sit in and operate. Restoration is currently taking place and includes work on the "Piedmonster's" electrical components, reassembly of the wings and housing, and addition of the Piedmont Airlines Speedbird logo to the "Piedmonster's" nose. Restoration is expected to be completed by the fall of 2006.
