SPENCER, N.C. — Time is running out to reserve tickets for the Virginia Autumn Flyer train excursion from Spencer, NC to Charlottesville, Va. Coach seats are still available for Sunday, Nov. 4, but all sales will end Friday, Nov. 2 at 3 p.m.

Coach seating, featuring wide windows, adjustable seats and convenient access to the commissary car, are available for $125 per person. All cars feature air conditioning, heat and restrooms. Tickets can be purchased online at www.nctrans.org , by phone at 704-636-2889 ext. 232, or in person at the N.C. Transportation Museum.

The Virginia Autumn Flyer, presented by the N.C. Transportation Museum Foundation and the Watauga Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, offers a rare daylight trip through the rolling hills of the Carolinas and the Western part of Central Virginia, using Amtrak and vintage rail equipment.

The excursion departs at 7 a.m. from the N.C. Transportation Museum, and will travel a railroad line that crests legendary White Oak Mountain, and passed the Dan, Roanoke and James Rivers, before arriving in Charlottesville, Va. at 12:30 p.m. Home of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville is full of history, and a short walk to the historic downtown mall offers unique shopping and dining opportunities. The train will depart Charlottesville at 2:30 p.m. and arrive back in Spencer at 8 p.m.

Seating is assigned by boarding pass. Boarding passes will be exchanged for prepaid tickets on the day of the trip beginning at 6 a.m. near the museum’s iconic silver water tanks, and ending 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Passenger preferences for seating toward the front, middle, or rear of the train will be honored on an as-available basis. Onboard snacks and souvenirs will be available throughout the train ride, and small coolers or picnic baskets are allowed if stored in the racks above the seats.

Tickets are required for everyone who will occupy a seat. Children under three years old who will not occupy a seat are free.

The N.C. Transportation Museum, located in historic Spencer Shops, the former Southern Railway repair facility for steam locomotives, is part of the Division of State Historic Sites, Department of Cultural Resources. The museum is conveniently located just five minutes off I-85 at Exit 79 in Spencer, N.C., and about an hour from Charlotte, Greensboro or Winston-Salem.
