All aboard for a rare daylight train trip through the Piedmont and rolling hills of the Carolinas and Western part of Central Virginia, as we travel to beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia.


 
Each of the two excursion trips depart at 7 a.m. from the North Carolina Transportation Museum located at 411 S. Salisbury Avenue in Spencer, NC (get directions from Google Maps) and at 8:15 a.m. from the newly restored Greensboro Amtrak Station at 236 East Washington Street (get directions from Google Maps). Remember, this is daylight savings weekend. Sunday travelers should be sure to check your clocks!
 
After a beautiful and scenic train ride, we will arrive in Charlottesville, Virginia at 12:00 p.m. Home of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville is full of history and unique shopping and dining opportunities.

First Class Service

 
We are pleased to offer two types of First Class accommodations - Dome and Premium aboard a number of specially-equipped cars. Car assignments will be based on capacity in each car, and all first-class passengers will receive the same level of special service.

First class fare includes complimentary continental breakfast and newspapers, and dinner will be served on the trip home. Our special car attendants will serve you so that all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride through the beautiful scenery.
 
Seating is limited in the First Class cars,
so please be sure to order early!

Passengers sitting in the First Class Dome seats will enjoy a 360 degree panoramic view of the passing scenery. Sit on the second level of a vintage rail car with glass surrounding the full length of the car. The view doesn't get any better than this!

Coach seating is also available. Seating is assigned by boarding passes received the morning of the trip.

Your preferences for seating toward the front, middle, or rear of the train will be honored on an as-available basis.
Onboard snacks and souvenirs will be available.

All cars feature air conditioning, heat and rest rooms.

Ride in vintage rail equipment with great window views of the beautiful passing scenery. The railroad line we travel crests legendary White Oak Mountain, and offers spectacular views of the Dan, Roanoke and James Rivers.

Once we depart Spencer, our train will journey through Lexington, and High Point before the scheduled stop in Greensboro. The journey will then take travelers through Reidsville, NC, Danville and Lynchburg, VA before arriving in Charlottesville.

You will have a rare daylight view of this beautiful route.

Ticket Info & Pricing
  • Parking will be at the North Carolina Transportation Museum located at 411 S. Salisbury Avenue in Spencer, NC (get directions from Google Maps) and at the Greensboro Amtrak Station at 236 East Washington Street (get directions from Google Maps).
  • The Transportation Museum is located just 5 minutes off I-85 at Exit 79. The Greensboro Amtrak Station is just minutes from downtown.
  • All rail cars are assigned by boarding pass. Boarding passes will be exchanged for prepaid tickets on the day of the trip beginning Saturday and Sunday at 6 a.m. in Spencer and 7 a.m. in Greensboro, ending 15 minutes before scheduled departure.
  • Train runs rain or shine. Substitute equipment may be used.
  • Be aware that the time changes on Saturday night, Nov. 1. Remember to set your clocks back one hour!
  • No alcoholic beverages, illicit drugs, or smoking allowed on train.
  • Small coolers and picnic baskets are allowed only if stored under or in the racks above seats. No coolers allowed in seats.
  • Onboard snacks and souvenirs will be offered.
  • All cars feature air conditioning, heat and rest rooms.
  • Shopping and eating areas are within walking distance from the Charlottesville train station.
  • For accommodations in the Salisbury/Spencer area, contact the Rowan County Convention & Visitors Bureau or call 1-800-332-2343. For
    accomodations in the Greensboro area, contact the Greensboro Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau at 1-800-344-2282.
  • Tickets are available online, by phone at 704-636-2889 ext. 232, mail, or in person at the N.C. Transportation Museum.
  • No pets.
  • No photo runbys.
  • Amtrak, NCTMF and WATV reserve the right to substitute motive power or rolling stock.
  • Amtrak, NCTMF and WATV assume no liability for failure to board train before it departs, or equipment failure. Both trips call for a full and exciting day. Please plan schedule accordingly.
  • No passes will be honored. No refunds, except in case of medical emergency; all refunds will be subject to a $40 processing fee and will be limited to 10 days following the trips.

  • These trips are sponsored by the N.C. Transportation Museum Foundation, the non-profit support group for the N.C. Transportation Museum, and the Watauga Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.
  • These are not regularly scheduled Amtrak trains, and cannot be booked or ticketed through Amtrak.
  • Tickets are available online, by phone at 704-636-2889 ext. 232, mail, or in person at the N.C. Transportation Museum.
  • Tickets will not be mailed out after October, 22. Tickets may be picked up the Will Call booth at your chosen boarding site (Spencer or Greensboro) on the day of the excursion.
