The immense Back Shop structure was built in 1905 and served as the major overhaul facility for steam locomotives. The largest structure on the site, and once the largest industrial building in North Carolina, the Back Shop served as an enormous machine shop where locomotives were disassembled with the aid of a crane.
U.S. Army Hospital Car #89480
The exterior and interior overhaul of the Army hospital car now enables NCTM visitors to journey through an interactive exhibit and experience an important piece of North Carolina’s transportation history. The car now houses exhibits and artifacts relating to the use of hospital cars during World War II.
